I have shared mike's story in another forum and I find it most rewarding to do so. :D

It seems to me that the hobbies of precision need pockets that are unbelievably deep. How else can you sustain yourself in a field of robotics without having to occasionally splurge hundreds for parts?

I digress. All it takes is a small leap of faith. You save up, buy a small machine, make parts, establish a mini machining shop and build up a work flow. It depends on your resilience...

I came here to say this. It takes something like $1.5-2k to set up a machine shop. While for others it may be a small amount, for others it may be a large amount. So it depends, if you are a hobbyist out to learn and establish yourself in the machining world, this does not have to be hard. Of course, you can't expect to make a living out of it at a go - but if you are already in the business, it is much easier to adapt new means and tech and use it to your advantage!

That is very true Theorigins. Let me however emphasize that this is just like any other business out there. One must be passionate about there work if they expect to get rich from it.

That is why some of the most successful businesses are extended from hobbies.

Its true that we can't all afford some of the hobbies that other people do but that does not mean we can't all do something profitable from our own hobbies.

That's true. The best benefit of having an hobby like this is that there is a possibility of extending your career from it.
