Contest: 3D Versus CNC; Which one is the fairest of them all?

Postby falanyani » Fri Feb 27, 2015 11:08 pm

What is the future of the industry? Is there a possibility that the CNC machines will have been replaced (or will have replaced) 3D printers? If we compare the CNC Machines versus 3D Printing, which technology is better in your opinion? Let me hear it :D :D :D

Right now, if you still doubt the strength of CNC machines; you are in for a surprise and are thinking like a layman. Can’t help wondering whether 3D printing will replace CNC machines in the near future? The answer is NO. There are still major challenges to overcome while using 3D printing. These problems are concealed by the media and you won’t know about them unless you have used 3D printing machines. Trust me on this.

Alright, let's see what you got mister. What makes you think that the advanced tech being used by NASA right now will be beaten by something that is not accessible by all. Take a glance at the futurist blogs out there for a start. You can't afford to be rigid, man. Be flexible with the times.

: First of all, this is not a personal attack as you are translating it. No, I am just trying to articulate a point here. Let's see some facts about your so- called advanced tech: Here is my strong points on the disadvantages of using 3D printing machines as compared to their master advanced fellows in large applications. It is summed up by one word, which you have probably never heard of. INCONSISTENCY.
There is inconsistency of materials produced by the 3D printers. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) which the commonly used method for 3D metal printers, produces varied materials basing on the structure being built. You will realize that a thick wall cools faster than a thin wall section there affecting the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the material.
There is an ongoing research on these impacts but for now the whole process still remains a myth to many (including you, I suppose).

SLM is always termed as green technology.

Taking into consideration the energy required for atomizing power and the waste generated by the process, this is a complete overstatement. Open your eyes man. :x

The CNC machines would triumph anytime over 3D printers. They carry out what their delicate cousins are incapable of doing. :|

3DPro, do you think so? Why?

However much this is dependent on the type of materials used, 3D printers are prone to high levels of residual stress. Residual stress is as result of localized heating and cooling during the process leading to deforming of material upon removal from build plate. Although, heat treatment can be used as a control measure, still this is a major problem. :!:

IMHO, 3d printers are not as accurate as the industrial 3d printers. Their products, at best, are second rate. They have rough surface finish. I have not used one but they are obvious from the YT videos.
Yes, the parts manufactured by 3D metal printers are incredible. However, when it comes to surface finish, it is disastrous especially parts which needs to fit accurately or precise mechanical system.
Their surface finish materials are generally rough resulting from partially melted raw materials.
