Can i resoulder my CNC router chip?

Postby n1h1l1st » Mon Jun 29, 2015 2:00 pm

Greetings all,
I use a board(3 axis) to drive my DIY cnc router that i built a couple of weeks ago.
Recently whenever i start engraving, i keep missing steps especially with the z axis.
Tonight i tried my 4th one when suddenly my X axis started shaking then KAPOOF, magic smoke.
Am low on budget so i need to get the cheapest way to fix this. Tell me this, is resoldering the chip possible at all?

If you have a small heating element, you can just solder but you will have to proceed with extreme caution so as not to damage the chip.

Re-soldering is possible but make you the pieces get stuck together tightly this time round.

Seconded this. However, unlike the Instructuble shows, you can cut down the amount of excess tin around the padding. Simply set your heatgun to 400+ degrees Celsius then solder every point down. The process takes just a few seconds and you're done. The downside to this method is that you'll need to be very precise - the chip integrity might be undermined. I'd say that you go with what suits you most.
