How to build a dividing head?

Postby Julia » Sat May 16, 2015 3:59 am

Hi guys, I am looking for an easy guide of building a dividing head. I know it is not that simple and the tutorials I have gone through so far are assuming that I know what is going on, etc. My question is; is it possible to build a dividing head from scratch? Thanks!

You had me a bit confused there; I thought you meant building a dividing head using a CNC lathe or something.

Ditto! Although it will be cool if something like that were possible! :D

Should I be ashamed for not knowing what a dividing head is?

You shouldn't. It is a small tool for dividing circles into smaller equal sections without taking forever.

How now? Why would I want to divide a circle into different equal parts? I thought that ended in the 5th grade...

You may not need to do that. However, these guys may need to do that...

I wanted to say "there is no one in that picture" then it hit me. You make gears using dividing heads. I am such a tool.

Technically, you can use a dividing head for any task which requires repetition and rotation. That is why it is used to rotate and mark measurements even through the tiniest of angles. Why would it be a great idea to make one? For the simple reason that these things are darn expensive.
