Tapered Roller Bearing

Postby steveJames » Fri May 13, 2016 10:18 pm

I have got an Acorn/Halifax lathe that I am trying to restore. There seems to be a problem with the taper bearing on the spindle. Have tried to purchase such bearings but their price is ridiculous. It cost something like $430 (yet the lathe itself goes for about $360). The bearing has got a shoulder on the outer part. I can easily access a cheap one with no shoulder. My worry is whether it can use the inner part and the rollers from a new taper bearing together with the old outer bearing that has a shoulder?

What is the bearing number? That would be more helpful if you let us know.

You can’t mix older and new parts and expect any precision. I would not recommend that at all. Any problem with the original bearings?
