Want to build an 8’x4’ 3 axis router

Postby Cncherbalist » Tue Apr 12, 2016 8:31 pm

For long, since my high school through college, I have had interest in CNC. I have some wood working background have not actually working on wood for some years. I want to try building my own CNC router. I have settled on the 8’x4’ router. I am intending to make children’s tables and chairs. Going through most forums I could see threads talking stepper/servo motors, things that are really new to me. So far I have seen that the only part that I can easily get is the steel frame. Any opinions please?

Hello,
Welcome to this forum. What you are looking into doing is very promising. Go around the forum and see what guys have done in the past. Take your pen and make some sketch ups and place it here and allow the guys here to comment/criticize it. Eventually you will go home with the right answer…

Hi,
welcome to this forum. I would advise you to get the basic frame design ready before you think of getting the electrics. Electrics will always depend on the design

I am not trying to scare you but if this is your first CNC machine, then I would advise you not to start with such a large machine. Starting with a large machine is a bad idea. Getting a large accurate machine I really very hard. Do your research very well, don’t rush into things.

Building a larger machine as a starter isn’t an easy task. Why don’t you start with a small one?

I was aiming at increasing my capacity within a year. I am doing business and it could be unprofitable to build a small machine. I understand the risk but I am ready to undertake it.
