Not a big deal really. They used the punched cards common with the era.

I often hear it being associated with the Hardinge lathes. A brand name perhaps?

Naah, not a brand name. It is derived from the DSM line of monitor lathes, which are medium to large lathes...Just a piece of nomenclature.
